Tribal Elder
The spirit dolls are handmade by The Sisters of Perpetual Whimsey, and they are culturally inspired variations of Horses, Dogs, Cats, American Pioneers, Native Americans, Mexican Women (each state in Mexico has a traditional Costume), African Warriors, African Women and African Animals. In each clay representation, the artist bakes in a white sage leaf for sanctification (a Native American tradition), a grain of salt and a crumb of bread to bring spice and plenty (an Eastern European tradition). The dolls carry a money bag or purse as a symbol of wealth and an antique optical lens to signify clear sight. There are dolls that represent cultures of other countries: the Tuareg Blue Men of the Sahara, Zulu Warriors, Nigerian Market Women, and American jazz singers. Some of the dolls have victorian-era silver trinkets, bead work, silk ribbons and authentic fabrics of silk and cotton voile in their costume. All are unique, all are made by the artist - me.
